Charles Square 1 / Hoxton, London
A Georgian building redesigned by our design studio to house 5 apartments that seamlessly blend heritage and modernity for a contemporary lifestyle.
Set across the ground and lower ground floors of Charles Square, Flat 1 is an elegant duplex that balances the original Georgian details with contemporary design. Generous ceiling heights, panelled walls, and tall original sash windows with shutters lend a sense of proportion and heritage throughout the home.
The apartment is arranged to offer both flexibility and comfort, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two reception rooms that can be configured for living and dining. At its heart, a spacious kitchen opens onto a rear terrace through full-height concertina glazed doors, creating a seamless connection between interior and exterior space.
The building itself dates back to the 1720s and has served many roles, from private residence to magistrate’s court and the Labour Party’s headquarters, before its careful conversion into five apartments in 2005. The renovation was undertaken with a considered approach to its listed status, restoring key architectural features such as the original staircase and fireplaces, while introducing contemporary interventions. Throughout the apartment, a refined material palette, including smoked oak flooring and high-specification Rotpunkt kitchens, ensures a lasting quality, bringing a sense of modernity that complements the building’s historic fabric.
